Old dogs can learn new tricks
I hear it over and over again:
‘I wish my dog had done fitness when they were younger. But they’re too old for that now!’
And it kind of just makes me want to scream! I feel like a broken record, but there is literally no dog out there (with the exception of those who have not been cleared by their vet to participate) that would not benefit from some level of canine fitness.
Will the workouts be as intense as their younger cohorts? Of course not.
We currently have a 12 year old Great Dane (who has outlived her breed’s life expectancy by 3 years!) that participates in fitness. An average workout for her involves walking back and forth and around cones, stepping up and over unstable obstacles and elevated sit to stands - all designed to maintain her range of motion and strength in her hind end and help alleviate some of the pain associated with arthritis.
She does 5 minutes of work instead of 15; she moves at her own methodical pace and she calls the shots.
In addition to helping her move better, do you know what else it’s working? Her brain - something that we often neglect in senior dogs, as we allow them to live the ‘easy life.’
If we can improve the live of a stubborn super senior Great Dane, I’m confident we can help your dog move better!
